Kidney function

eGFR (CKD-EPI 2021, race-free)

Adult creatinine-based, race-free estimated glomerular filtration rate.

Intended population: Nonpregnant adults aged 18 or older who are not receiving dialysis, using standardized IDMS-traceable serum creatinine at steady state.

  • This is an indexed estimate, not measured GFR or a diagnosis of CKD. Creatinine–cystatin C estimates are preferred when greater accuracy is needed, particularly near a clinical decision threshold. Abnormal muscle mass and other non-GFR determinants affect accuracy.
  • Not for pregnancy or patients receiving dialysis. Pregnancy changes renal physiology, and dialysis alters creatinine independently of native kidney clearance; use an appropriate renal assessment.
